| Walk for Love promotes safe haven for GLBT teens
TARRYTOWN - Teens from several high school chapters of the Gay-Straight Alliance united to walk through five towns yesterday for the 2nd annual Walk for Love. The walkathon raised money for Center Lane, a support center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens in Westchester. Walkers began the 8-mile trek at Lyndhurst in Tarrytown and traveled along the Old Croton Aqueduct to Reynolds Field in Hastings-on-Hudson. Some residents also joined the students, who were from 10 high school chapters of the GSA. Ray Bagnuolo, an Ossining High School teacher and minister at Palisades Presbyterian Church, came to support the teens. "It's important for people to take a position and let people see who you are," he said.
Teens text to peers in dating violence awareness session
Text messaging is a medium embraced fully by teens, so what better way for them to spread the word about dating violence? About 100 students at Coronado High School engaged in a textathon Thursday morning, in an effort to raise awareness of this problem. Brittany Tietz, a junior, already was aware the hard way, unfortunately. He wasnt beating me, but calling me names, said Tietz, 16. Like, S-L-U-T. In receiving that verbal cruelty, Tietz became a statistic. Studies show that at least one in five teens will be in a relationship marked by abuse, either physical or emotional. We need to deal with this issue, Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross told the teens, and we need your help. But a problem enlisting young adults in fighting dating violence is that many dont know what behavior from a partner is inappropriate, according to a social worker at the school.
Teens Find Sites Addictive
Parents, do you ever walk by the computer where your teen is working on homework and wonder if he or she is doing something else instead? Many parents have concluded that they are -- teens can press one or two keys to minimize all open windows when parents walk by. And that something else is probably Facebook or MySpace, social-networking Web sites that are captivating to teens and young adults. They allow users to post profiles of themselves and create a network of friends that they communicate with. Both sites are highly addictive. Many youths check their profiles constantly. They are rewarded with hearing from old friends, receiving a new message, checking out new photos, reading a blog or searching for new profiles. Social-networking sites will probably spawn a new addiction with its own 12-step-program greeting: "Hi, my name is Leonard, and I'm a Facebooker.

Police: 4 teens hurt in Seattle bus assault
SEATTLE (AP) -- Seattle police say four teenagers picked the wrong man to harass on a Metro bus late last night. Police say when one of the teens attempted to take the man's glasses, he pulled a knife and fought back. Police spokeswoman Rene Witt says the man began swinging at his attackers in self defense. When the melee was over, four of the teens had cuts, including some with superficial cuts to their buttocks, and one had a dislocated shoulder. The man was not hurt. Witt says the incident began about 11:15 p.m. on a northbound bus traveling along Rainier Avenue South. She says the teens boarded near Rainier Beach High School, having attended a football game there. Police reports described the teens as known to officers who were active members of a local gang.
