Morristown, Mendham's Vigilante capture gold
ELIZABETH -- Laura Vigilante had never before raced in an invitational meet, let alone seen Warinanco Park. But in the end, neither fact mattered. Vigilante, Mendham's sophomore speedster, clocked in at 16:28 to capture gold at the Stewart Memorial Invitational on Saturday. Not so bad for a newbie, eh? "It felt so good," Vigilante said. "I wanted this so bad." Saturday's other highlights included Morristown's girls tallying 70 points to bring home a first-place team trophy. Mendham's boys (66 points) and Madison's girls (59) took second-place team finishes. Michael Franklin of Mendham grabbed third-place (16:28) in a race with some of the state's best. Morristown's Dale Kinney (19:32) and Rebecca Enright (20:13) placed second and third, respectively. Vigilante, in her first cross country season since dropping soccer, has been on a tear.

Inside a magical mystery movie
A publicist warned that Jim Sturgess looked just like his character in "Across the Universe." OK, "warned" isn't the right word. Promised was closer. Sitting in an overly air-conditioned ballroom at the Four Seasons, the 26-year-old Brit was as shaggy, loose and winning as Jude, his "Across the Universe" avatar. (The film is scheduled to open Friday in Denver.) Though he's done television work in Britain, the role of a young man who travels to America to meet his father and is swept up in the cultural jubilee and political trauma of the '60s marks Sturgess' true debut. Two days later, director Julie Taymor's extravagantly loving Beatles musical was to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. "I'm kind of terrified about that," Sturgess said of the flashbulb demands and red- carpet extravagances.
