Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway
Buffer or gooseberry? Three isn't always a crowd when you're in a long-term relationship

What is green, hairy, into dieting, and hangs out with Courteney Cox and David Arquette? Answer: Jennifer Aniston. In a development that is both cruel and deplorable (journalist code for 'funny'), people are starting to ramp up the mockery of Jennifer Aniston for hanging out so much with Courteney and her husband David.

The Jen mockers have a point: every time the Cox-Arquettes are pictured (on beaches; with daughter Coco; at restaurants), Jen is there, like the worst kind of Relationship Zelig. To the point where one wonders if Jen pops up between them in bed. Or if they open the fridge and Jen is there, curled up in the egg section, handing them the Omega spread.

It’s always nice to take a few bites out of the Big Apple

Last week I had coffee with Jake Gyllenhaal, lunch with Willem Dafoe and lunch with Anne Hathaway. Well, not exactly with them, but near them.

I was a Portlander in New York City, and besides spotting celebrities (and those are juicy ones, aren't they?) I enjoyed some seriously good food and drink.

So I have a few suggestions for anyone planning a trip to NYC. You've heard of most of these places before. They aren't undiscovered gems, but I do highly recommend them.

For a long time a trip to NYC meant drinking lousy coffee. But, in recent years, a few quality coffee spots have opened in Manhattan. My friend's father, an espresso connoisseur, alerted us to Joe in the West Village (www.joetheartofcoffee.com) – conveniently, the neighborhood where we stayed.

At the tiny spot you may not snag a table, but you will find a perfect latte.

Film Clips

BALLS OF FURY (PG-13). Satire of "Enter the Dragon" not too good but funny now and then (1:30). HH1/2 (Strauss, Los Angeles Daily News — 8/30)

BECOMING JANE (PG). Pleasant-enough remake of "Pride and Prejudice," subbing Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) for her literary creation Elizabeth Bennett (1:52). HHH (Whipp, Los Angeles Daily News — 8/17)

DEATH AT A FUNERAL (R). Chaos takes over as a British family tries to give dear old dad a dignified send-off. Mildly amusing, heavily telegraphed farce suffers from a lack of zip (1:30). HH1/2 (Whipp, Los Angeles Daily News — 9/14)

EASTERN PROMISES (R). It could have been epic, this tale of Russian mobsters prowling the London underworld. It could have been an instant classic — David Cronenberg's "Godfather," perhaps. But in a world where directors can't seem to overcome their sense of self to bring in a picture at a reasonable length, Cronenberg has given us one that feels tantalizingly too short.

Lethal Weapon

But hey, what's past is past right? Once military leaders became aware of the IED threat, they began a "costly and frustrating struggle" against the weapon. The early efforts in this struggle make up the bulk of the Post's part one coverage (there's an intro as well). It's not the most exciting read, but it does provide a unique look at how the lumbering military is trying to adapt on the fly to tactics it didn't anticipate.

DiCaprio gets the call for a South Pole race

AFTER nearly drowning when they rowed across the Atlantic, Ben Fogle and James Cracknell vowed that they would never attempt such a foolhardy challenge again.

However, two years later the adventurers are planning a race on foot to the South Pole - and trying to recruit Leonardo DiCaprio, the Hollywood star, to join them.

The pair will fly to Los Angeles in the next few weeks to meet the actor after he expressed an interest in the expedition.

Fogle, 34, a television presenter, and Cracknell, 35, a former Olympic gold medal-winning rower, believe DiCaprio may be the ideal person to complete their three-man team, which will attempt the 426-mile journey in sub-zero temperatures next year.

"We know he wants to go to the South Pole and we know he wants to do it on foot," said Fogle this weekend.
