Forget bare backs and legs up to there. The latest body part to show off on the red carpet is a long, elegant neck, framed by a dramatically high collar. Actresses such as Cate Blanchett, Eva Mendes and Liv Tyler have stepped out in the memorable look. "High, ruffle collars created one of the most modern necklines for the season," says Heidi Meek, a stylist at the Cloutier Agency who has worked with Kerry Washington, Claudia Schiffer and Eva Longoria. "Several ready-to-wear designers took this Napoleonic feel to their collections — Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren, Jean Paul Gaultier." Designers aside, perhaps no one has done more to raise the profile of high collars than Katie Holmes, who wore an Armani blouse with a shimmering, flouncy neckline at the dinner party the night before she married Tom Cruise.

Black Dahlia, The (2006)(Widescreen)
. Ellroy's book is a murder mystery that revolves around Elizabeth Short, the struggling actress who was brutally slain in the 1940's, and whose killing has never been conclusively solved. The grisly real-life murder is the perfect subject to explicate Ellroy's ongoing theme, which is the question of why men commit violent acts against women. And the fictional investigation story that Ellroy builds around that murder makes the book the perfect vehicle for De Palma to express his favorite theme: the question of why morally weak men are unable to save women. Ellroy's novel and De Palma's adaptation of it tell the story of Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) and Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart), two cops whose lives become consumed with their investigation into Short's murder. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Blanchard's obsession with solving the case has a lot to do with his pathological need to be a white knight for the women in his life—particularly his emotionally and physically scarred girlfriend, Kay (Scarlett Johansson).
