Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock
DVD Review: The Lake House

Judging by the cover, this looks like some cheap attempt to re-create the chemisty between Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves that excited audiences in Speed. It seems the adage that applies to books can also be applied to DVDs, as this flick is actually not as bad as its fluffy cover shot would suggest.

Oddly enough, given that the premise demands that the protagonists reside in wildly different time zones, Bullock and Reeves only have a smattering of scenes together. But relief that this is not just a cookiecutter romantic-comedy cash-in isn't enough to make this a great movie.

The plot is an interesting one, placing Dr Kate Forster (Bullock) in 2006 and – via a letterbox that seems to exist in both the present and the past simultaneously – allowing her to communicate with Alex Wyler (Reeves) in 2004.

Old gem comes out of its shell, learns new tricks

The pearl dates back to the earliest civilizations and was the first gem to be valued. It is still used for elegant, classic jewelry. But it has gotten a makeover by some designers that's brought the pearl right out of its shell.

Britney Spears, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox are just a few among the crop of celebrities who've been seen wearing their pearls.

"They've come back huge in the past 18 months to two years," says Virginia Halevi, editor-in-chief of the Web site jewelry.com that provides information on jewelry. "Everyone thinks of pearls as their grandmother's or mother's strand of pure white pearls. But with cultured pearls, they became a lot more affordable."

Until recently, the jewelry industry was finding the traditional treatment of pearls boring, she said.

Two full-size bowling lanes is good enough for anyone

Thanks to home basketball courts, climbing walls, pinball machine rooms and a variety of other popular new recreation rooms, a lone pool table will no longer suffice. The one that caught my eye was the rec room with two full size bowling lanes. Starting at a mere $19,000, you too could have this in your rec room.If it is good enough for actress Sandra Bullock, it ought to be good enough for us. I think hers was more like $88,000. It's just money.Maybe the following kegler's have some secret lanes in their homes. Ron Taylor, Mike Becker and Pat Force all recorded a 277 at Westbrook Lanes. What a trio. Jim “the Kid" Murcek rolled the high series of 739.Bowler of the week honors go to Larry Haiar, Lori Wessel and senior Don Gablenz.

Stacy Keibler: No DUI For Me!

After a night of partying in Hollywood, the "Dancing with the Stars" beauty chose to take a cab home instead of getting behind the wheel. (Good girl, Stacy!) And before riding off, she let everyone know there's no place like home for Christmas this year.Outside of Hyde, we caught Taboo of Black Eyed Peas, who threw up a deuce for TMZ cameras. Right behind him -- Kristin Cavallari and her latest man-friend, Nick Zano from "What I Like About You," smiled as they got ready to drive off together, and Kim Stewart and her entourage weaved their way through the flashing bulbs. Making a less invasive appearance, Rick Salomon walked by looking important as ever while talking on his cell. And rounding out the evening, "Desperate Housewives" hottie Josh Henderson, who spent some quality male-bonding time with a former Britney Spears back-up dancer.
